On February 25th, 2007, Pastor Steve Andrews of
Kensington Community Church shared with us an email he received from fellow Pastor Craig Mayes. Immediately following this church service, the idea for the Donation Store was born. See the point in the service that inspired us below.

The Donation Store allows
one time commitments of dollars towards
specific campaigns that meet the supporters' desires at an
affordable price.
Our “store” concept allows you to “shop” amongst various campaigns. You can “purchase” one item or multiple items. You can “shop” one time or on a regular basis. There are no monthly or yearly commitments. By working with wholesalers and low-cost vendors to buy in bulk, we are able to get items at a cheaper price than if you purchased them at your local retail chain. We also take care of shipping the items to those in need, making it that much easier for you!
In addition,
100% of your donation goes to your chosen campaign. We do not “shave off the top” for our operating expenses. Funding for our general operations comes from fundraising events, corporations, foundations, and those who wish to support us monthly by joining the
Donation Store Club or
Donation Store Team.
At the end of the day, you know exactly what your contribution went towards or paid for. What is the Difference?
Other charitable organizations tackle needs in a much different way than our not-for-profit concept.
THE MONTHLY FEE ORGANIZATIONS:
Supporting a 3rd world child can be a great way to have a positive long term connection with one person. These foundations help provide a well-rounded balance of different needs from education to health and food. These programs are wonderful; however, they require between a $24 and $32 per month commitment. We realize that a yearly commitment of over $250 can be a struggle when bills stack up at the end of the month. We understand, with the current economy, that nothing is for certain in our own futures--especially for people our age (in their mid-20’s), as well as other living in the Metro-Detroit area.
NORMAL CASH DONATIONS:
Charity Organizations often ask for general support to make a difference. You send a check and assume that 80% or more of the dollars donated went to the cause. Otherwise, it is often unclear what the actual monetary amount specifically paid for.
The Donation Store allows you to shop to support a cause that you are passionate about. It makes specific needs of individuals or organizations known. It makes us aware of how far as little as $12.50 (or 3 lattes) can go. Your donation goes dollar for dollar to someone in need, and you know exactly what you are buying for them.
