Meghan and Justin have been working on starting a not for profit over the last several months. We were drawn to start a not for profit to give us and others an easy way to make changes in peoples lives. In February of this year during a church service the pastor asked what $12 would buy… the answer: 3 lattes, a gallon of gas, or a year’s supply of epilepsy medicine for a child in India so he wouldn’t have seizures. We both thought if only we knew, we would have gladly given the $12. We quickly realized that was what most people that heard the message were probably thinking, and then the idea for Donation Store was born.
We are pleased to tell you that we have finished our planning stage and have officially started the Donation Store. Donation Store is an online store where donors can ‘shop’ for various causes and purchase items for those people. Some of the featured products we are planning to include are: backpack and school supplies for inter-city children in Detroit, hats and gloves for children in need, text books and shoes for orphans in India, as well as partnering with other organizations from time to time that show a need.
Our first featured product will be a backpack and school supplies kit for Hutchinson Elementary School in Detroit for the 2007-2008 school year. According to the 1999 census, in the zip code where Hutchinson Elementary School is located over 30% of families live below the poverty line, 3 times more than national average. The median household income was less than $25,000 for this neighborhood, nearly half of the national average. By purchasing a backpack and school supplies kit, our donors will be providing children with the basic necessities to learn this coming school year. The administration in this elementary school have stressed that the need is great and are encouraging us to succeed. Our goal is to raise backpacks and school supplies for all of the estimated 430 children that will attend this school next year. Each backpack and kit is only $17.00 and available for purchase at www.donationstore.org.

We are enthusiastic about the changes that we can make in our community and abroad, but we need your support. Spread the Word: As we are a new not-for-profit we need your help to tell as many people as possible about our cause. This can be as easy as forwarding this email to everyone in your email contact list and encouraging them to send to 10 other people. Join the DS Supporter Club: Our staff is made up entirely of volunteers, and 100% of your ‘purchase’ price goes towards the item that you’ve purchased. Our current overhead cost to run the organization is $180 per month and to help cover this overhead cost we have formed the DS Supporter Club. Membership into this club is honorary and requires a recurring commitment of at least $10 per month. Members of this group can donate more than $10 a month and are encouraged to do so. You will receive monthly news letters showing our current activity and future goals so that you can see how your membership and support is changing the lives of others. We will list and thank our Supporter Club members on our website. We are currently seeking 15 members into the DS Supporter Club to help support this overhead cost.
